Materials for Pinhole Workshop

Box/container

(if you're not sure, ask ro before beginning and/or bring multiple so you can share with your fellow students)

spend 5-10 minutes going around your apartment/a thrift shop/wherever and look for a box
- that is not bigger than 15-20cm in any dimension
- that is not smaller than 2 cm in any dimension
- it can be any shape (tubes are ok)
- that is a material you know how to work with easily (thick card/paperboard is great)
  - plastic is unreliable (sometimes it is not solidly light tight)
  - metal is usually light tight (unless theres a few holes) but you'll need to know how to cut it and modify it (can require specialised tools)
  - corrugated cardboard can be ok but often boxes with corrugated cardboard are too big
  - sturdy paperboard (not corrugated) is my favorite
    - easy to cut and modify
    - solid and light tight
  - glass is not light tight and hard to modify
- that you don't think lets any light in (not even a little bit)
  - no light through a translucent plastic
  - no light through holes (even small ones)
  - etc
think about how to make it so no light can get in
- by default it should not have any holes
you don't really want/need it to be big
it's nice if it closes with a (removable) lid and not flaps
not too big (unless you really want to spend a lot more money/picture and have a big bulky thing to move about)

tapes: a few small rolls is better than one big roll (as possible) so students can share more easily
- black electrical tape
- aluminum foil tape
- double sided carpet tape (very sticky)
- paper/masking tape black
- black gaffer tape and/or black duct tape
paperboard/matboard
- scraps of passpartout is cheapest
- otherwise the black stuff is also good
black marker/quick drying black paint (not spray)
everyone should have (and know how to use)
- pen,
- pencil,
- cutting mat,
- craft knife,
- ruler
darkroom stuff to be shared
- photographic paper 25 8x10inch (should be enough unless students want to make really big boxes (which they should not!)) (doesn't have to be the exact size)
- b&w paper developer (not film developer)
- (stop (can be water))
- fix
- gloves (a box of the disposable kind)
pinhole
- soda can material is great for this (five empty soda cans is enough)
- needle/pin (I can bring a few to share)
- sand paper (200ish grit) (I have a sheet that could be shareable)
